A collection of five Chinese lacquerware items comprising four shallow circular dishes and one elongated octagonal tray, likely dating to the late Qing dynasty? period. The pieces are constructed from wood with a layered lacquer finish. Three of the circular dishes feature cinnabar-red rims and exteriors with darkened central wells decorated with narrative scenes of figures in traditional theatrical or courtly dress within architectural settings, executed in a cinnabar-on-dark-ground technique. The fourth circular dish is finished in black lacquer to the well, showing a heavily worn landscape scene with remnants of gilt decoration. The octagonal tray is finished in a natural wood tone with fine black-line and gilt-painted decoration, depicting a standing figure in elaborate costume before a seated figure framed by a circular moon-window. The borders of the tray are decorated with foliate scrolls and chrysanthemum blooms. The items show significant age-related characteristics including a fine network of craquelure to the lacquer surfaces and evidence of hand-painted provincial production. There are no legible maker’s marks or inscriptions visible on the front surfaces.
