The tool features a cast iron body with a black japanned finish, fitted with a 2-inch steel cutter and a lateral adjustment lever. The handles are constructed from stained hardwood, comprising a rear tote and a front knob with a polished finish. The lever cap is adorned with a black and orange adhesive label reading STANLEY in block capitals. The casting behind the front knob is marked BAILEY, and the area behind the frog is marked No 4. The steel iron is stamped MADE IN ENGLAND at the top. The plane is accompanied by its original orange cardboard box with a green and white label reading STANLEY BAILEY IRON SMOOTH 2 IN. CUTTER 9 IN.
