Two vintage costume jewellery brooches comprising different early plastic materials and decorative techniques. The first is an oval openwork brooch featuring a cream celluloid? / casein? scene of two birds perched amongst branches and flowers. The design is set within a textured gilt metal effect inner rim and surrounded by a cream-coloured moulded plastic border with a scalloped pie-crust edge. The birds and floral accents are finished with small touches of blue, green, and red paint. The reverse is fitted with a simple metal pin and C-clasp mechanism. The second item is a clear Lucite? / acrylic? brooch of scalloped pentagonal form. It features a reverse-carved floral basket motif, with the design cut into the rear surface and painted to create a three-dimensional intaglio effect. The bouquet includes pink, blue, and yellow flowers with green leaves held in a golden-toned basket. A metal safety clasp is adhered to the reverse.
