A British World War II Defence Medal, issued between 1939 and 1945. The circular cupro-nickel medal features the bareheaded effigy of King George VI facing left on the obverse, surrounded by the circumscription GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP:. The reverse (not visible) traditionally depicts the Royal Crown resting on an oak tree, flanked by two lions. The medal is suspended from its original silk ribbon, which displays a central flame-coloured stripe flanked by green stripes, with thin black stripes representing the blackout. The ribbon remains housed in its original protective wax paper sleeve. This example is accompanied by its original cardboard mailing box, bearing a circular black ink postmark reading OFFICIAL PAID with a central crown, and is addressed in blue ink to Mr S B King 21 Winter Rd Basingstoke Hants. Also included is the original award enclosure slip featuring the Royal Coat of Arms printed in red ink, with the text The Under-Secretary of State for War presents his compliments.
