A maritime navigational instrument of circular form, constructed from brass and mounted on a pedestal base. The device features a fixed outer bezel graduated from 0 to 360 degrees and a rotating inner dial plate with matching degree markings, alongside a vernier scale graduated 0 to 60. A central cross-bar assembly is mounted above the dial. The dial plate is engraved with the capital letter N at the north point and bears the printed inscription ALEX MORRISON & SONS GLASGOW arranged in two lines. The entire unit is supported by a brass pedestal featuring a ball-and-socket joint for leveling, terminating in a circular flange base with three countersunk mounting holes. Two rectangular extension arms project from the sides of the main housing. The instrument appears to be lacking the upper sighting vanes or alidade typically associated with this model.
