A heavy-gauge brass nautical instrument component, likely the base plate or dial for a pelorus or binnacle assembly. The circular plate is mounted within a calibrated outer ring, both featuring engraved degree scales from 0 to 360. The central inner dial retains remnants of a silvered finish and includes cardinal direction markings, with N and W clearly legible. The inner plate is etched with the maker’s name and location reading ALEX MABON & SONS GLASGOW. The assembly features three primary apertures: a large central circular void and two smaller circular holes. Two rectangular mounting flanges extend from the sides, each with multiple pre-drilled screw holes for attachment to a larger housing. The item shows significant green and brown oxidation and patination across all surfaces, with the silvering on the inner dial appearing heavily worn and tarnished.
