A watercolour and bodycolour painting on paper by Sir William Russell Flint (Scottish, 1880-1969). The composition depicts a sun-drenched coastal scene, likely in Italy or France, featuring a central female figure in rustic attire seated beside a harbour wall. She is shown in profile, focused on the task of repainting a long wooden oar blade with blue pigment. The background is dominated by the weathered, tonal facades of Mediterranean-style buildings with open shutters, laundry, and balconies. Several additional oars lean against the masonry, and a small rowing boat is visible to the right. The work is executed with the artist’s characteristic fluid washes and precise figurative detail. The painting is signed in dark pigment along the lower right vertical edge W. RUSSELL FLINT. The work is presented in a multi-layered mount within a giltwood frame. An adhesive label on the backboard from Gandini’s Frames, Chertsey, bears the handwritten title Repainting Oar Blades and attribution by Sir W R FLINT, dated Sept ’86.
