A Russian? papier-mâché lacquer box of rectangular form, featuring a hinged lid and four bracket feet. The lid is decorated with a hand-painted scene depicting a traditional troika carriage drawn by three horses through a snowy landscape, executed in a colourful folk-art style. The painting is framed by fine gilt-metal effect scrollwork borders against a black lacquer ground. The interior is finished in a glossy cinnabar red lacquer. A partially legible signature in gold-toned Cyrillic script is present on the lower right edge of the lid painting; the characters appear to read ‘Мс’ followed by further illegible letters. The item measures 6″ x 4″ x 2.5″.
