A sterling silver napkin ring of cylindrical form featuring ornate Victorian style decoration. The exterior surface is densely worked with chased and engraved foliate scrollwork and acanthus leaves against a fine hatched background. The piece is further distinguished by crenulated or notched rims at both the top and base. The interior retains a gilt gold-wash finish. The exterior surface bears a full suite of British hallmarks including the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and the date letter ‘b’ in a shield cartouche corresponding to 1901. The maker’s mark is partially integrated into the engraved design and appears to read ‘R & SB’ in a rectangular cartouche, likely for the firm Rolason & Sheldon?.
