An Art Deco sterling silver ashtray of square form with incurved corners and a central circular well. The flat rim is decorated with a fine engine-turned barley-corn pattern within plain polished borders, featuring four recessed cigar or cigarette rests. The underside of the central well is stamped with the maker’s mark M&W in a shaped shield, alongside a full set of British hallmarks including the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, and the date letter H for 1932. The base also features a two-line retailer stamp reading MAPPIN & WEBB LTD / LONDON & SHEFFIELD.
