A solid sterling silver five-bar toast rack of angular, geometric form. The piece features a four-compartment design with five vertical dividing bars, each of rectangular section with a chamfered top. The structure is supported by two flat, T-shaped upright handles at either end, connected by parallel base rails. The design reflects a late Art Deco influence, characterised by its clean lines and functionalist aesthetic. A full set of English hallmarks is struck to the outer edge of one base rail, comprising the maker’s mark M&W in a scrolled cartouche for Mappin & Webb Ltd, the crown symbol for the Sheffield assay office, the lion passant indicating sterling silver purity, and a lowercase w in a shield-shaped cartouche for the year 1939.
