A sterling silver five bar toast rack of geometric Art Deco design. The piece features flat-section rectangular bars with an integrated stylized central handle, sitting on a rectangular base supported by four small integrated feet. The outer face of one end bar is struck with a series of hallmarks comprising the maker’s mark M&W in a rectangular punch for Mappin & Webb?, the lion passant for sterling silver, the crown town mark for the Sheffield assay office, and the lowercase date letter w for 1939. The construction exhibits the streamlined aesthetic characteristic of the late 1930s.
