A Victorian-era rotating swivel brooch featuring a circular outer frame with a heavy rope-twist design. The central oval mount is held on a horizontal axis, allowing the piece to be rotated to display either a gemstone or a photographic portrait. The primary face is set with an oval cabochon banded agate?, displaying concentric orange and white bands. The reverse side contains a glass-covered locket compartment housing a sepia-toned photographic portrait of a woman, characteristic of late 19th-century mourning or memento jewellery. The mount is constructed from a gilt-metal effect base metal, with an engine-turned chevron border surrounding the agate. The reverse of the outer frame features a simple C-clasp and hinge pin mechanism missing.
