Buyer's Premium:

A late 19th-century mantel clock designed in the French Louis XVI revival style. The case is constructed from panels of carved translucent onyx featuring gilt-metal mounts. The architectural form is defined by a central body flanked by four gilt-metal figural mounts depicting female busts on tapering pedestals. The piece is surmounted by a twin-handled onyx urn finial and stands upon a stepped onyx base supported by ornate gilt-metal feet. The onyx dial is adorned with applied gilt Arabic numerals and small hand-painted floral sprays, set within a cast gilt-metal bezel. To the rear, the mechanical twin-train movement features a bell strike on the hour and half-hour. The movement backplate bears an illegible circular stamp alongside the incised numbers 6 7 1 and 9 2 4 6 8. Similar clocks were frequently imported and retailed by prestigious firms such as Bailey, Banks and Biddle. A winding key is present.
