A late 19th-century French mantel clock of architectural form, constructed from gilt brass. The rectangular case is flanked by four fluted columns featuring spiral floral wreaths and is decorated throughout with intricate repoussé floral and foliate scrolls. The side panels are designed with pierced openwork lattice. The clock is surmounted by a domed top with a cast flame finial and rests upon a stepped rectangular base with a shaped front apron. The ornate gilt dial has a pierced floral centre, with hours indicated by black Arabic numerals set within individual circular cream enamel cartouches. It features blued steel hands and two winding apertures. The dial is marked French Make above the centre arbor. The mechanical spring-driven movement has a circular backplate with an illegible maker’s stamp and serial numbers, and a strike mechanism that sounds on a coiled steel wire gong. Accompanied by a double-ended winding key.
