This colour lithograph depicts a profile portrait of a Native American man wearing a feathered headdress and traditional attire. The print is executed in the Art-Relievo style, a process involving embossed lithography popular at the turn of the 20th century. Based on visual consensus, the image is attributed to Alfred S. Campbell (American, 1840-1912) and was originally used in advertising for Rouge Rex Shoes. The print is housed in its distinctive, wide, rustic dark-stained wooden frame, which features an applied miniature hand-painted wooden tomahawk ornament at the upper left corner. The reverse of the frame is sealed with brown paper that bears a handwritten pencil notation reading 471/40, along with other faint, illegible markings.
Frame Width: Approximately 19 cm.
