A Central African style carved wooden figurative sculpture, commonly referred to as a power or fetish figure in the style of a Nkisi. The figure is depicted in a semi-squatting posture with knees bent, standing upon a stylised, carved petal-form base. The hands are raised to the chin. The head features carved scarification marks on the temples and forehead, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a broad nose, and an open mouth displaying carved teeth. The top of the head is flat and carries a small white paper label with the handwritten reference D81. The torso is wrapped in thick, dark braided fibre cordage which secures two bulbous gourd-like medicinal vessels to the abdomen and sides. Tied to the upper back is a cylindrical, cloth-wrapped bundle secured by the same rope. Tufts of raffia or straw fibre are visible beneath the bindings. The piece is constructed from a dark brown stained hardwood with natural plant fibres, cloth, and organic vessels.
