A circular ceramic dish featuring a deep iron-red lustrous glaze, in the style of Carlton Ware’s Rouge Royale line. The central decoration depicts a pair of Japanese cranes (tancho), with one bird standing amongst yellow and white blossoms and another in flight. The dish is finished with a white border featuring fine black and red geometric patterns. The dish is set within a decorative gilt metal mount, likely brass, featuring a crenellated or pie-crust rim and two ornate handles cast in the form of stylized dragons or mythical creatures. This style of mounting was frequently used for high-quality decorative wares brought to the European market. The underside of the dish is obscured by the mount, and therefore no maker’s marks are visible.
The porcelain dish measures approximately 14 cm in diameter.
