A mid-20th-century novelty earthenware potpourri jar and cover of bulbous form. The body features a relief-moulded figure of a child or gnome wearing a green peaked hat and textured garment, appearing to peer out from a fold in the ceramic. The jar is flanked by two distinct zoomorphic handles, one modelled as a ram’s head and the other as an elephant’s head with a curled trunk. The domed lid is pierced with teardrop-shaped apertures for the release of scent and is surmounted by a simple, rounded finial. The piece is finished in a matte cream glaze with hand-painted details in green, tan, and flesh tones, accented by a black band encircling the rim. There are no visible factory marks or signatures.
