Another Great Auction
A set of hand-coloured sporting prints, comprising aquatints with etching after original designs by Henry Alken (British, 1785–1851). The series consists of plates individually titled ‘Grouse Shooting’ (Plate 1), ‘Partridge Shooting’ (Plate 2), ‘Pheasant Shooting’ (Plate 3), and ‘Duck Shooting’ (Plate 4). Each work depicts hunters in period attire with gundogs in various English countryside settings. The inscription ‘H. Alken delt’ is present in the lower-left margin of each plate, identifying Alken as the draughtsman. The prints exhibit clear plate marks from the intaglio printing process. They are housed in matching black-painted wooden frames with a decorative gilt-beaded inner slip.
