Another Great Auction
An Art Deco sterling silver matchbox sleeve manufactured by the prestigious firm Sampson Mordan and Co. The piece bears a full set of London hallmarks on the side, including the maker mark S M and Co, the lion passant indicating sterling silver purity, the leopard head for the London assay office, and the date letter p for 1930. The exterior faces are decorated with a fine engine-turned wavy chevron pattern. One side features a centered, vacant circular cartouche. The rectangular sleeve is designed with open apertures on the sides to allow access to the striking surface of an inserted matchbox.
