A 9ct gold and enamel civic Mayoral jewel for the Borough of Pontefract. The central shield features the town armorial bearings, a three-towered castle over blue and white enamel waves, flanked by a white rose of Yorkshire in enamel. A blue enamel ribbon across the top is inscribed MAYOR above a date plaque for 1930. At the base is a white enamel scroll bearing the town motto POST MORTEM PATRIS PRO FILIO (After the death of the father, for the son). The reverse is professionally engraved COUNCILLOR PERCY BENTLEY M.C. MAYOR 1930-31. The recipient, Percy Bentley, was a decorated veteran of the First World War and holder of the Military Cross. The piece is fully hallmarked with the maker mark AF for Arthur Fenwick Ltd, the 9 and .375 marks for 9ct gold purity, the Birmingham anchor assay mark, and the date letter f for 1930. It is attached to its original blue silk ribbon with gilt-wire borders and a gold-toned suspension clasp. The item is housed in its original red velvet-lined presentation case, the interior lid stamped Groombridge’s Goldsmiths Bridge Street Pontefract.
