Another Great Auction
A circular silver-plated iced butter dish insert or strainer produced by the renowned French silversmith Christofle for the Cunard White Star Line. The piece is designed in the Art Deco style, featuring a central twelve-pointed starburst perforation surrounded by radiating groups of three parallel linear slots. It is fitted with two flat, rectangular handles, each decorated with four incised parallel lines. The face of the insert is stamped with the Cunard Steamship Company crest, depicting a lion rampant holding a crown. Also present on the face are a rectangular Christofle mark, a mark reading CEPCº, and a circular hallmark containing a pair of scales with the letter C on either side, topped by a bee symbol (the Christofle silver-plate balance mark). The underside of one handle is stamped with the manufacturer name CHRISTOFLE and the model number 4770. These inserts were designed to be placed atop an ice chamber within a butter dish to keep the contents chilled during service.
