Another Great Auction
This Victorian sterling silver vesta case was produced by William Henry Leather and assayed in Birmingham in 1894. The item is of rounded rectangular form and features an all-over engraved foliate design of leaves against a textured cross-hatched ground. Centred on the front is a shield-shaped cartouche containing a finely engraved cursive monogram, which appears to read HML. The outer edges are finished with a delicate beaded border. The case is constructed with a hinged lid and includes a small suspension loop attached to the side for use with a watch chain. A clear set of English hallmarks is struck on the inner rim of both the body and the lid, comprising the maker mark W.H.L for William Henry Leather, the lion passant standard mark for .925 sterling silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, and the date letter u for 1894.
