Another Great Auction
This is a George V sterling silver table or cigarette box of rectangular form. The hinged lid is decorated with engine-turned linear patterns within a cast foliate and scrollwork border. The sides are polished and plain, and the box is raised on four cast shell and scroll pattern feet. The interior is lined with cedar wood and contains a single central divider, creating two storage compartments. The underside is fitted with a textured dark material, possibly leather or rexine. Hallmarks are struck to the side of the body: the maker mark W L D & S for W. Lister & Sons (William Lister & Sons), the lion passant for sterling silver, and the date letter V in a clipped corner square for 1920. The assay office mark is worn but consistent with Birmingham.
