Bernard Louis Borione (French, born 1865). This nineteenth-century oil painting on stretched canvas depicts a “Cardinal” genre scene, a theme popularized in the late 1800s. The composition features four figures in an opulent 18th-century style interior: a cardinal in vibrant red robes sits in the foreground with a contemplative expression, while two gentlemen in period frock coats and powdered wigs are engaged in a game of chess at a table draped in a patterned cloth. A fourth man stands behind them, holding a glass of wine. The interior is richly detailed, featuring a large painting on the rear wall, an ornate clock on the mantelpiece, and a decorative screen to the left. The work is signed in the lower right corner B. Borione with Paris inscribed below, accompanied by a stylized monogram consisting of two overlapping A characters. The painting is housed in a substantial and ornate gilt-wood frame featuring scrolling foliate and shell-motif carvings.
