This mid-20th century chemical analysis outfit was manufactured by The British Drug Houses Ltd. (BDH) of London. The set is housed in a rectangular wooden case, likely oak or beech, featuring finger-jointed corners and a simple metal latch. A white metal plaque is pinned to the centre of the lid and is inscribed: B.D.H. / SPOT TEST OUTFIT / THE BRITISH DRUG HOUSES LTD. / LONDON. The interior of the lid contains a printed paper index titled LIST OF REAGENTS INCLUDED IN THE B.D.H. SPOT TEST OUTFIT, which details 27 substances such as Acridine hydrochloride, Cacotheline, and Rhodamine B, and their corresponding detection targets. The base of the case is fitted with compartments containing an assortment of glass reagent bottles, many of which retain their original numbered labels and contents. Scientific apparatus included in the set consists of a white porcelain spot plate with twelve circular depressions, a large glass test tube containing cotton wool, several glass slides, and a bundle of fine glass capillary tubes. The outfit is further accompanied by original ephemera, including an On His Majesty’s Service (O.H.M.S.) brown paper envelope for absorbent papers and a softcover instructional book titled THE BDH SPOT TEST OUTFIT HANDBOOK, Third Edition.
