Another Great Auction
A trio of Chinese hand-carved hardwood decorative wall masks depicting traditional elder figures and immortals. The subjects include a representation of Shou Lao, the God of Longevity, identified by his characteristic high, domed forehead. Each figure is rendered with expressive facial features, including serene smiles and detailed, flowing beards. The masks are carved in high relief from a dense, dark-grained hardwood with a polished patina that emphasises the natural grain. The reverses are hollowed for wall mounting and show rough-hewn tool marks from the carving process. Two of the masks feature modern white adhesive inventory labels to the reverse, each printed with the digits 4851.
