Another Great Auction
A Mercury Coin First Day Cover (PNC) titled Classic Locomotives, produced to commemorate the bicentenary of the steam engine (1804-2004). The cover features a complete set of six multi-coloured Royal Mail stamps depicting heritage steam locomotives: GCR 8K 2-8-0, CR 439 0-4-4T, TR No. 2 Dolgoch, BR Standard 4 2-6-4T, SR West Country 4-6-2, and GWR Manor 4-6-0. The stamps are tied to the cover by two circular pictorial first day cancellations from Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil, dated 13 January 2004, inscribed Steam Bicentenary. Inset into the cover is a United Kingdom bi-metallic two-pound coin commemorating Richard Trevithick’s invention. The coin reverse depicts an early steam locomotive with the inscriptions R. Trevithick and 1804 Invention Industry Progress 2004. The cacheted cover includes a central landscape photographic illustration and a printed identification label at the upper right numbered EM 8989.
