A group of copper pennies issued during the reign of George III and struck at the Soho Mint. This specific coinage is known as the cartwheel issue due to the distinctive wide raised rims. The obverse features a laureate bust of George III facing right with the incuse legend GEORGIVS III D G REX appearing on the rim. The reverse displays a seated figure of Britannia facing left with a shield and trident accompanied by the incuse legend BRITANNIA and the date 1797. These coins were the first official British pennies to be struck in copper using steam-powered machinery.
