A group of British copper coins issued during the reign of King George III. The collection includes 1797 one penny pieces struck at the Soho Mint, commonly referred to as cartwheel pennies due to their wide, flat rims and incuse lettering. The coins feature a laureate bust of George III on the obverse and a seated Britannia reverse. Also included are smaller copper denominations, likely halfpennies or farthings, from the same period. These 1797 pieces were the first official copper pennies struck in Great Britain, produced using Matthew Boulton’s steam-powered presses.
