A pair of Japanese Satsuma earthenware miniature vases of baluster form with flared rims and foot rings. The vases are decorated in polychrome enamels and raised gilding (moriage) over a cream-coloured earthenware body featuring a fine crackle glaze. The central decorative bands depict large chrysanthemum (kiku) blooms and dense foliage in shades of orange, blue, and pink. The necks and bases are finished with cobalt blue borders, embellished with gilded diaper patterns, scrolls, and geometric motifs. The base of each vase bears a printed mark in brownish-red for FOREIGN and hand-painted red script characters reading Matsuyama (松山). These marks indicate production for the export market, specifically for the United Kingdom, during the late Meiji or early Taisho periods.
