This Russian lacquer box is crafted from papier-mâché and features a hand-painted miniature scene on the lid. The scene is executed in the Kholuy style, depicting a narrative from the Russian fairy tale The Scarlet Flower (Аленький цветочек / Alenkiy Tsvetochek). The composition shows figures in traditional folk dress within a wooden architectural interior, painted in tempera with gold leaf highlights. The lid is bordered by a delicate gold filigree scroll design. The interior of the box is finished in a red lacquer. The lid bears several gold Cyrillic inscriptions, including the title Аленький цветочек (Alenkiy Tsvetochek), the location п. Холуй (p. Kholuy), and the artist’s signature Блинова (Blinova). The underside of the base is marked in gold script with Made in USSR. The item is accompanied by its original Soviet-era paper certificate from the 1st-degree Lacquer Miniature Factory in Kholuy, Ivanovo region. This document identifies the artist as Blinova, the subject as The Scarlet Flower, and provides a production date of March 1985.
