A mid-20th century English earthenware onion storage jar and matching cover produced by James Sadler and Sons Ltd. The jar is fashioned in an anthropomorphic form with a bulbous body featuring a stylized face with large eyes and scrolling hair-like motifs in relief, flanked by two small scroll handles. The tapered lid is embossed with the word Onions. The piece is finished in a variegated treacle-brown glaze that pools in the recesses to accentuate the moulded details. The base is impressed with the factory mark SADLER ENGLAND.
