This Russian lacquer box is a product of the Fedoskino factory, the oldest traditional centre for Russian lacquer miniature painting. The rectangular box is constructed from papier-mâché and features a hand-painted lid depicting the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg. The architectural scene is rendered with fine detail, showing the colourful onion domes of the cathedral against a dramatic, swirling sky, with the Griboyedov Canal in the foreground. The painting is framed by an ornate gold-painted scrollwork border. The exterior of the box is finished in a high-gloss black lacquer, while the interior is coated in a traditional vibrant red lacquer. Fine gold Cyrillic inscriptions are located along the lower edge of the lid: Федоскино (Fedoskino) on the left, Спас на Крови (Spas na Krovi, transliterating to Savior on Spilled Blood) in the centre, and the artist signature Васин П. (Vasin P.) on the right.
