A Russian lacquer box crafted from papier-mache in the village of Fedoskino. The lid features a hand-painted miniature portrait of a young woman titled Baryshnya (Young Lady), transliterated from the Cyrillic Барышня. The subject is depicted in a nineteenth-century style with dark curls and a prominent white ruff collar, set within a beaded oval border against a dark ground with gilt foliate corner accents. The sides of the box are decorated with a repeating black and white floral pattern. The interior is finished in a traditional red lacquer. To the right of the central image, red Cyrillic inscriptions identify the production centre as Fedoskino (Федоскино) and the title of the work. Below these is a handwritten artist signature, transliterated as Borisova (Борисова).
Width: 10.2 cm (4 inches).
