A Soviet-era Russian lacquer box produced in the renowned artistic centre of Palekh. The rectangular box is constructed from papier-mache and finished in a traditional black lacquer. The lid features a finely hand-painted scene in tempera illustrating the Russian folk tale The Frog Princess (Tsarevna-Lyagushka). The composition depicts Ivan Tsarevich in a decorated red caftan kneeling in a marshy landscape before a green frog that holds his arrow. The painting is notable for its use of vibrant colours and delicate gold leaf highlighting, characteristic of the Palekh school. The sides of the box are adorned with a repeating gold scroll border. Several gold Cyrillic inscriptions are present on the lid: the top left reads Erova 1970g (Ерова 1970г), identifying the artist and the year 1970; the bottom centre reads Palekh (Палех), indicating the place of origin; and the bottom right displays the serial number N 10466 (№ 10466). The interior is finished in a traditional red lacquer.
