A late 20th-century Russian lacquer box of oval form, produced in the village of Fedoskino. The container is constructed from papier-mâché with a polished black lacquer exterior and a characteristic cinnabar red lacquer interior. The lid is decorated with a realistic hand-painted miniature in oils, depicting a young woman in traditional 19th-century Russian attire. The subject is shown wearing a red sarafan embellished with gold-toned embroidery, a red beaded necklace, and an ornate golden kokoshnik headdress. The painting technique utilizes the traditional Fedoskino method of layering oil pigments, possibly over a reflective metal leaf or mother-of-pearl underlay to enhance the luminosity of the garments. The lid bears three distinct inscriptions in gold Cyrillic script: Девушка в кокошнике (Devushka v kokoshnike), meaning Girl in a Kokoshnik; the artist signature С. Ерескина (S. Ereskina); and the provenance Федоскино 1998 г. (Fedoskino 1998 g.).
