A Russian Palekh lacquer box of rectangular form, constructed from traditional papier-mache with a polished black lacquer finish. The lid features a hand-painted miniature scene in tempera and gold leaf, depicting a classic Troika scene with multiple three-horse carriages carrying figures in traditional dress through a snowy winter landscape at sunset. The composition is framed by a delicate gold-painted foliate scroll border. The lid bears three Cyrillic inscriptions in gold paint: at the upper left, Тройка (transliterated as Troika); at the upper right, Палех (transliterated as Palekh); and at the bottom right, a vertical signature beginning with the character В (transliterated as V) followed by several characters that are not clearly legible. This item likely dates from the mid-to-late 20th century, representing Soviet-era production.
