A First World War era commemorative desk box of mixed metal construction. The item features a heavy brass lid and base plate with a central body of steel finished with a dark, iridescent blue and black patina. The lid is inset with a raised copper shield-shaped cartouche. The brass lock escutcheon is engraved with the numerals 18 above the keyhole and a stylized 1914 below, signifying the dates of the conflict. The interior is fully lined with deep blue velvet fabric. The box is accompanied by its original brass key featuring a decorative trefoil bow.
