A pair of Chinese architectural panels of rectangular form, constructed from carved hardwood with remaining traces of red lacquer. Each panel features a central openwork relief carving of a mythical qilin or stylised deer set amongst scrolling foliate branches. The central motif is positioned against a reticulated background of geometric lattice. These pieces were originally designed as decorative inserts for architectural features or furniture such as beds or screens. The reverse sides are left in a rough, unrefined state.
