A square red earthenware tile featuring a linear design after a wood engraving by Eric Gill (1882-1940) titled Seths Vision in Paradise. The decoration is executed in dark brown line work beneath a transparent honey-toned lead glaze. The scene depicts figures from the apocryphal Legend of the Holy Rood, including a large reclining figure, a serpent, and smaller figures within a celestial vision. The right-hand margin is inscribed in a stylised font SETHS VISION IN PARADISE. The reverse of the tile is unglazed and features an impressed cross-hatched grid pattern designed to provide a key for mortar.
Dimensions: 14cm x 14cm.
