A Japanese style carved wooden spice chest or desk tidy, likely constructed from cherry or a similar dark-grained hardwood. The box is of elongated rectangular form and contains four individual compartments, each fitted with an independently hinged lid. The lids feature scalloped upper edges and are decorated with hand-carved circular medallions depicting floral arrangements. The top and side panels are further embellished with incised floral and bamboo motifs, while the vertical dividers between the lids are decorated with a carved geometric fretwork pattern. The compartments are joined at a common base and the lids are secured by individual brass hinges. The interior surfaces show natural wood grain and evidence of previous use. No legible maker signatures or inscriptions are present on the visible surfaces.
