A British miner’s safety lamp of typical cylindrical form, constructed from polished brass and glass. The lamp features a cylindrical brass chimney section with a domed top, accented by a row of vertical rivets and circular ventilation apertures. The lower section consists of a clear cylindrical glass chamber protected by four vertical brass pillars. A circular brass nameplate is affixed to the chimney, embossed with the text E. THOMAS & WILLIAMS LTD MAKERS ABERDARE WALES in the outer ring, and CAMBRIAN NO 37698 in the centre surrounding a Prince of Wales’s feathers emblem. The base of the glass frame is further stamped with the initials ETW. The internal oil reservoir and wick mechanism are visible through the glass chamber, and the top is fitted with a suspension loop.
