A pair of tin-glazed earthenware (faience) candlesticks of baluster form. The pieces are hand-painted in a polychrome palette of cobalt blue, yellow, ochre, green, and iron red. The decoration includes scrolling foliate motifs, stylized floral sprays, and geometric rouleau borders. The underside of one foot bears hand-painted marks in manganese or dark blue consisting of the numerals 111 above a horizontal divider, with / 188? below. A further mark to the left appears to be a combined L and S? monogram. The earthenware body is visible at the points of glaze loss and is a buff-to-pale-terracotta colour.
