A Chinese silk embroidery panel of rectangular form, worked in fine satin stitch on a pale grey silk ground. The central composition depicts a playful scene of a fluffy white and grey cat observing a large green mantis? or katydid? positioned amongst stylized grass stems embroidered in yellow and green tones. The embroidery displays fine textured work to the cat’s fur and the segmented body of the insect. To the left side are four black embroidered characters reading 游戏真美 (Yóuxì zhēnměi), translated as ‘Play is truly beautiful’, positioned above a square red embroidered seal mark? that is not clearly legible as a name. The work is mounted under glass within a dark-stained hardwood? frame featuring a carved bamboo motif and is fitted with a traditional brass cloud-shaped hanging bracket.
