A mid-20th-century? sewing basket of rectangular form with a single carrying handle. The exterior is constructed from woven synthetic and natural? fibres in tones of brown, tan, and cream, featuring a diamond-weave pattern to the sides. The lid is inset with a floral tapestry fabric depicting roses in shades of orange and yellow, framed by a scrolled border, and is secured by a brown plastic loop and peg closure. The interior is lined with gold-coloured satin effect fabric and includes a gathered storage pocket and an attached pincushion to the underside of the lid.
The basket contains a collection of sewing notions and supplies. These include three pincushions, notably a teal silk ‘Chinese boy’ style pincushion with small padded figures, and a circular red velvet pincushion with a lace border. The assortment includes various wooden and plastic thread spools, with legible marks for J.P. Coats marked MADE IN GT BRITAIN and Gütermann. Other items comprise a wooden tatting shuttle? / darning egg?, a red plastic crochet hook, a length of red ribbon on a grey card, and a partial card of Buttonhole Elastic marked Zack.
