A Victorian style novelty bar brooch designed in the form of a ceremonial sword. The hilt is constructed with intricate heraldic and architectural detailing, featuring a grip decorated with a fleur-de-lis motif and a pommel of globular form. The crossguard is cast with terminal figures resembling winged lions or griffins, flanking a central circular medallion with a quatrefoil device. The base of the hilt displays a portcullis or castle-like architectural element. The blade is of tapering form with a central fuller. The reverse is hollow-cast and fitted with a simple C-clasp and a long pin that runs parallel to the blade, secured by a central metal bridge. The item is composed of a yellow metal with a gilt metal effect finish over a darker base. No maker marks or hallmarks are legible.
