This lot consists of two bench smoothing planes constructed from cast iron with a black japanned finish. The first plane features a lever cap with a raised rectangular logo reading STANLEY with orange paint infill. The toe of the cast iron body is embossed No. 4. The second plane has a lever cap bearing a red and silver label reading RECORD. The toe of this casting is embossed with the word RECORD and the model designation No. 04. Both tools are fitted with wooden front knobs and rear tote handles. Each plane retains its steel cutting iron, cap iron, and lever cap with the associated adjustment mechanisms.
