A matching pair of mid-nineteenth-century framed items comprising a steel engraving and an accompanying historical text sheet. The engraving, titled ESCAPE OF CARRARA, is after a painting originally exhibited in 1834 by Sir Charles Lock Eastlake, P.R.A., and depicts the dramatic flight of Francesco Novello di Carrara, Sovereign of Padua. The work displays the fine intaglio line work and precise cross-hatching characteristic of steel engraving, including a visible plate mark indentation from the printing process. The second item is a framed page of descriptive text providing the narrative context for the scene. Both pieces are housed in matching gilt-composition frames with decorative inner borders. The engraving bears a printed inscription at the lower left reading PAINTED BY SIR C. L. EASTLAKE, P.R.A. and at the lower right reading ENGRAVED BY F. BACON. The lower centre of the print is inscribed ESCAPE OF CARRARA. The text page is headed with the printed title THE ESCAPE OF FRANCESCO NOVELLO DI CARRARA SOVEREIGN OF PADUA. and includes the credits PAINTED BY SIR CHARLES LOCK EASTLAKE, P.R.A. and ENGRAVED BY FREDERICK BACON. A small white adhesive inventory sticker is located on the top right corner of the larger frame bearing the printed number 5043. The text page features a printed page number 48 at the bottom centre.
